Bakery Travel Log

I love to travel!  And its amazing the little gems you can find while out and about in a new place.  When I travel, I look up local bakeries to see whats new.  So, if you’re ever in the same areas I hit up, you know where to go.

Travel log: South Lake Tahoe.  I (and a small entourage of family) visited a local favorite called Don’s Cakes by the Lake.  And actually, its more than a local favorite.  While there, I met a couple who always come out from Washington to indulge.  Don has done a lot of wholesale (he supplies almost all of the coffee shops in the area), but is now open to retail customers.  He also headed up a culinary program at the local college.  It is not unheard of for Don to be making 60 wedding cakes for a single Saturday!

Don’s advice to beginning bakers is “Don’t be afraid to fool around.”  And that’s one of the reasons we love Don.  Experiment with flavors, explore new ideas, and make the kitchen a creative place!

While the Key Lime Pie is a customer favorite (and a favorite of my sister-in-law’s), I fell in love with the tarts.  They were beautiful and delicious.  Everything looked good, though.

Don is wonderful!  If you’re in that area, go over to Camp Richardson and say hi!  His website is
