- 1. Supplies (plus a ruler and cornstarch)
- 2. Use equal parts Gumpaste and Fondant (that will make it less breakable, but a little heavier.)
- 3. Roll out a rectangle
- 4. Cut into strips (these are 1″x4″). You will need 12 , but work in chunks so they don’t dry out (cover the ones you aren’t working with).
- 5. Drape strips over dowel.
- 6. Wet the inside edge.
- 7. Seal edges together.
- 8. Remove the dowel.
- 9. Cut into point.
- 10. Turn on side and let it dry.
- 11. Make a circle with 12th strip.
- 12. Cut out a circle of fondant, and then let all pieces dry… overnight if possible.
- 13. Attach strips with royal icing.
- 14. Add another, trimming as necessary to make them fit.
- 15. Repeat until the first layer is complete.
- 16. Begin next layer.
- 17.
- 18.
- 19.
- 20.
- 21.
- 22. Attach the tube on top.
- 23. Let it dry for 24 hours.

Very nice! I have always pinched the ends of each ribbon loop to make it a little thinner at the end, and then have trouble getting it all to fit together nicely. I like how you have cut the ends into a point. I am definately going to do that next time. Thanks for the tutorial.
Your welcome! I hope that works for you!
I’m going to have to show your blog to a cousin of mine. She loves to make cakes. Great tutorial. I don’t make cakes (or cook much for that matter) but the pictures with your tutorial make me want to try it!
Its easier than you think Aleta!
Kasey’s been telling me about using gum paste! I’m so glad you had her be a guest so I don’t have to sit and bug her to remind me how to do it.
We’ve done two bows in the last few weeks and this looks much simpler (of course…again!) than how we put it together. Love the points, ours were pinched as well. Can’t wait to try again!
Hey! I'd like to know if it's necessary to dry out the indivudual strips of gumpaste (after carved) before creating the bow? Won't it be easier to make the bow while the pieces are moldable, so you can stick it together and then let it dry before placing on the cake?
